A College Student's Letter to the Younger Generation

So here is my disclaimer: This is my opinion. These are the thoughts that have been going through my head. I am sorry if anyone gets offended. If you don't read anything from this entire rant, at least skip down to my Stop/ Learn. That's the message I really want to send.

Dear Current Middle School and High School Students,
Hey! College life is great. It is a lot of work, and definitely a struggle, but it is so worth it. But I didn't write this to talk about me. I wrote it to talk to some of you.

Maybe this isn't my place to judge. Maybe it's not my place to talk. But I am tired of seeing it on Facebook. Kids are getting suspended. Kids are into drugs. And having babies.

I read my news feed on Facebook and I see people complaining about school and promoting the legalization of weed all over the place. What happened to playing with dolls or video games?

Post 1 of 3: What Strengths Training Did For Me

I want to apologize to anyone who talks to me on a daily basis for anytime in the future. I have just completed the strengths training through the TeamMates and Gallup partnership! So bare with me if you have no idea what I am talking about or if you think I am a little crazy.

This is my first post of the series. There will be two more coming up, so make sure you look out for them!

My first reaction to my strengths when I took the strength finder was "My mom has these on her top 5 and I am just like my mom, so why don't I have them on my top 5." I didn't know why I wasn't a Maximizer and I thought for sure that I would be a Woo. I think that I was almost disappointed with my top 5 because they weren't what I was expecting, but after reading through the definitions of each of my top 5, I understood immediately what those strengths looked like within me.

Input: People who have a high theme of input have a craving to know more. Often archive all kinds of information.

Learner: These people have a high desire to learn and continuously improve. Typically enjoy the learning process more than the outcome of it.

Discipline: Very focused and pleased by routine and structure.

Significance: Often want to be very important in others eyes. They are independent and want to be recognized.

Achiever: they work hard and posses a great deal of stamina. They take satisfaction with being productive and busy

Now, I have to say that when I first say the significance, I HATED it. I didn't like the idea of needing the approval of others. I didn't want to have significance on my top 5.

After I completed the actual day of training, I realized why I have significance. My mom is a maximizer, which means that good can always be great. This often left me feeling like I wasn't good enough. I was doing so many things in high school. I was working full time and involved in every club in high school, but I always felt like there should be one more thing that I should be doing on top of everything. I still have that feeling, but it is not nearly as strong. Thankfully, my mom being a maximizer led me to a great resume and lots of scholarships, but it also fed my significance strength.

Now that I look at each, individual strengths. It's obvious. I understand who I am and why I do some of the odd things that I do.

Input: I have every single note I have taken since 8th grade science, because I might need that information or someone else might need it. In fact, I just used all of my notes from Freshman Biology and AP Biology during Spring semester this year for my biology class. Conveniently, we did a lot of the same labs.

Learner: I could read for DAYS if people and real life wouldn't interrupt me. I have a list in the back of every single notebook from conferences and discussions of books that people mention for me to read. Will I read them, yes. Maybe some of them. But having that list of books I want to read is the way I am going to learn.

Discipline: Military. nuff said. I crave a day to day schedule and I crave to know what is happening the next day.

Significance.. This mostly relates to my military as well. I go out of my way to do a lot of stuff for people, just for a simple thank you. I often get frustrated when I am not appreciated or my hard work goes unnoticed.

Achiever: This I get from my mom. Some call it a hard work ethic. Some call it an over achiever. I have been called both.

Names that I have been called to make my strengths seem negative:
  • Nosy
  • Brown Noser
  • Know it All, Nerd
  • Control Freak
  • Too Organized
  • OCD
  • Suck Up
  • Over Achiever.

The strengths training made me realize that the names that I have been called, are not a bad thing about me. They are a good thing. They are what makes me, Me! (: I am uniquely me.
I also learned that it is a 1 in 1.33 million chance that you share the exact same top 5 in the same order. That makes me unique.

How would you feel after learning why you do some of the weird things that you do. How could this help you as an adult or how could it have helped you in 3rd/4th grade. What about high school?

Input: Always looking things up
Learner: Blocks that you use to start learning your letters
Discipline: 12 pt Font. Times New Roman
Significance: Biggest font, bright yellow, Underlined
Achiever: A very busy font

If you are interested in this strengths finder, all you have to do is go to this website. There is a fee of a little less than $10, but it is well worth it. After completing the questions, the site will reveal your top 5 and give you the information about them.
This is a great thing to use to figure out what your strengths are and how you can use them to benefit you!

Have you already done the strengths finder? What are your top 5 and how did they help you!?

Why a Liberal Arts Degree is for Me!

Lately, I have heard a lot of people talking about Universities and how Technical programs are becoming way more efficient. "Liberal Arts is a thing of the past" Lots of people have said that they don't see why people would spend so much money on a degree that doesn't really teach you how to "do" anything.

I know the economy hasn't been great and people don't always find jobs with liberal arts degree, but people don't always find a great job with any degree and you are more likely to find a job that pays more than minimum wage with either a degree, or experience.

I am going to University of Nebraska for a Bachelor's of Arts Degree. My major is Psychology and I have a quadruple minor. My minors are Child, Youth, and Family Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Conflict and Conflict Resolution (Similar to military history), and LGBTQ Studies (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual and Queer/Questioning). I have a VERY liberal arts degree.

5 reasons why a Liberal Arts Degree is for me!

1. Liberal Arts broadens your mind.
Liberal arts = education for life, not for a job that will be extinct in a decade     I have met a lot of close minded, stuck in their ways people in the past. With more education, comes more open views about the world unless you decide to shut out any existence of truth in the knowledge that you are receiving. There is a lot of information in the world and people tend to only go with what they know. Liberal arts can help you learn more and be more educated about hot button topics. Liberal arts majors are more likely to not be racist, sexist, or judgmental compared to people with little to no education.

2. A Wealth of Knowledge
In my one year at college, I have learned about women in history, benefits  biking to work, the Trans-Canadian Pipeline, transgender surgery, how plants make food, how to write a poem, statistics, how to code for computers (kind of), Pavlov's Theory, what parts of the body actually cause tolerance with alcohol, the history of South Africa, things that threaten babies lives during pregnancy,   and that is simply one thing per class that I have taken.  You can't say that technical school taught you all of that in great depth.

My New Blogging Plan

I have struggled with what this blog is about most of the time that I have had the blog. I have spent hours searching other blog sites and reading all about what they do for their blog to make it work.

I am going to try something new and I hope to keep with it throughout the school year. I may have a few weeks were I struggle to keep up, but I will make sure to at least post every once in a while. I am really excited to start this!

My plan is to have a different theme for every day Monday-Friday. Each day will have a theme but it will be broad enough that I can write about a lot of things that are under that category. Every week will have a different blog post for that day of the week.

Off the Desk Paper Organization!

Since I've been at home since the move, I have taken it into my hands to do the house cleaning (for the most part), meal planning, and organizing (again, what I can do.)

I am constantly finding that I don't have a place to put the bills other than under a magnet on the fridge because 1. there are two drawers in our kitchen and they are both taken. and 2. There isn't a whole lot of table and counter space as you walk in the door. (Bonus because our tables don't become a catch all). Anyway, I am always afraid I am going to lose an important piece of paper and not be able to find it when it comes time to pay that bill. Our office desk is less than functional because we have a TV sitting on it to be used as a monitor for my broken laptop.

10 Things To Do AFTER Moving to a New City

This is a blog in progress, but I am quickly working on a checklist of things to do after you have moved to a new city.

I am moving from Lincoln to Beatrice to Omaha all in a 2 month time span. I finished my college semester and I am planning on moving to Omaha shortly after returning to South Africa. Beginning of June, I will be packing up my belongings and moving to an apartment. I have been working on downsizing and packing my things, but there is a lot more to moving than your moving your stuff.

You are moving your life as well.

I am slowly creating a to-do list of things that need to be done after your move.

Take a walk in your neighborhood. Take your camera to capture the new views to share with your friends back home.

Find a library and get a card.  Read about the area if you are in a completely different state. You may be surprised as to what you would learn about a new area.

Find a GYM close to your house! The closer, the more likely you are going to be willing to go

Go eat at a local restaurant near your new place. Find places that you have never eaten before and ask about the favorite dish. Also, find out if your favorite restaurant is close by.

Drive to work to find a good route. (Drive at a time that you would be normally driving so you can figure out traffic)

Find a good grocery store that you like shopping at. Look at the places with the lowest prices.

Find the nearest hospital (especially if you are accident prone)

If you are involved in a club in your old city, find a similar club in your new city. Find the places that you want to get involved with and figure out the point of contacts for those people.

Check out the neighborhood churches. Start looking for a new church to call your home

Check out the downtown shopping near you. Find out what is near you.

Enjoy the time with your other half and kids if you have them. It is a new chapter for all of you. Embrace it together.

This is just a really short list. This is simple way to get involved in place where the new chapter of your life is beginning. My thinking is the more that you walk around the area, the better you will feel at home.

I have been working on the list for a little over a week. I have taken a walk. Found a gym (in my apartment complex), checked out the downtown shopping, and found a grocery store that I enjoy. (the Commisary at Offutt)

Tell me about your moving experiences! What are the things that you have done after moving to a new town. Are there other things that you have done with kids to help get them situated?

Why You Should Let Your Kids Pick Their Paint

Wow, has it been a crazy month or what. My laptop screen broke, I got back into the states
(currently working on the blog posts to share my great experiences) and now I am in the process of completely cleaning out my room and getting rid of anything that I possibly can.
Now, maybe I am writing this blog to prove a point to my parents, but maybe I am just curious as to see what other people out there think.
I am trying to redo my room for my little brother who turns 7 in 2 weeks. I wanted to do it as a birthday present, but also as a bribe to get him to get rid of some of his toys and start keeping his room clean. (Yeah, right. A 7 year old boy keep his room clean, I know. I am crazy.)

If you have never met him then you wouldn't know that he has lived and breathed John Deere and tractors since he was learning to talk. He actually learned his colors by the brands of tractors (John Deere Green, Allis Chalmers Orange, Case IH Red... So on..) It was adorable.
I want to paint his room Green, With a yellow and a Black stripe. Like the picture to the side, without the yellow ceiling. I am hoping to get creative enough to put a little red barn and a dirt path on the wall, but first I have to get past my parents.

Reasons for Letting Kids Pick their wall colors

1. Paint isn't all that expensive.
Kids grow up and they change their minds. They go through phases where they like one thing, then they like another. It happens. A little bit of paint can go along way when it comes to making a kid's room their own. I am not saying redo the carpet every time they want a different theme in their room, but bookshelves, dressers and bed posts can be painted. Walls can be painted.

2. Creativity
Everyone complains about how the United States education system is suppressing kids' creativity, but what about when it comes to being at home. Is that helping them any? Kids are naturally creative, until they learn that it isn't acceptable. Encourage kids to be a little crazy. Have some fun.
One comment I read on another blog said that she grew up in a home with all white walls. Now that she is older and has her own home, her walls are still white because she is scared to make a mistake. She continued to say that her sister grew up later than her, but had a colorful walls. Now, her sister is grown up and has yellow walls with blue ceilings because she isn't afraid of making those mistakes.

3. Bonding time
My dad and I painted my room my sophomore year in high school. He had 2 days off of work during the summer and we spent the days picking out paint, taping off windows, listening to music, and getting the job done. I was so excited when we finally finished my room, but it was fun to spend that time with my dad.

4. Coolest Parent Award
When your kids have friends over, they will most likely play in his/her room. Their friends will comment and say how cool their parents are for letting them do it. (especially as they get older.) I know parenting isn't about being the cool parent, but sometimes for kids it takes a friend saying how awesome your parents are for you to realize how lucky you have it in the home that you do.

5. Pride and Courage
Have you ever watched a kid's face as you open a present that they picked out all by themselves. For Christmas, Luke had taken a piece of wrapping paper and drew a picture on the white side. Then he wrapped it up and put it under the tree for me. On Christmas morning, he insisted that I opened that one first. I gave it the "Oh my gosh, that is sooo cool Luke! thank you!" response, but it was the pride and excitement that he got because he didn't need any help in doing any of it. It was all him. This is the same when they get to make choices about what they want their room to be.

6. Ultimately, they are the ones living there.
Yes, it is your house. But doors can be closed. This could turn into one of those teaching moments of "You made the decision, now you have to live with the consequences." Before you paint, sit down and explain to your child that they don't get to repaint it all of the time. Your child will have to live with this decision for a while afterwards, even if they don't like it. But if they love it, you can close the door, or show it off. It may turn out better than you think.

7. Moving..?
If you aren't planning on moving for quite some time and you have stable jobs near the home that you are in, then there will always be plenty of time to repaint before you move in a few years.

If you have other questions, be sure to check out chapter 5 of The Last Lecture! He got to paint on his walls when he was young, and to this day, his rocketship and quadratic formula is still there and his mom shows it off.

When we painted my room, I wanted to be a photographer more than anything. I finally had talked my parents into letting me put black on my walls. My walls are white in the middle and black at the top and bottom. They resemble a picture frame. In the white space, I used push pins to hang up all of my photography that I had entered in 4-H. I had drawings from school stuff and other art work that I had done. I really thought that I had the coolest room ever. I painted my desk black and got a new black bookshelf. I painted an old red dresser black and got a pair of black sheets.

I seriously thought that I had the best room in the world. It represented who I was and who I wanted to be very well. It is true that I no longer want to be a photographer, but I do still think that the walls are pretty cool and it looks very nice with the black furniture, but this room is ready for something else. John Deere Green and Yellow for an adorable, spoiled little 7 year old, because that is what currently represents him and who he is.
I plan to put up a green shelf with a "fence around it" for parking for his toy tractors. I have a couple of graphics that I am going to put on canvas for his walls.

I am really excited about this project and I can't wait to see the look on his face when it is done.

Now, I must admit that I am neither a home owner nor a parent... so there maybe some things that I looked over. But the real question.. What color did you always want to paint your room when you were a kid? Did your parents let you or not?

Why I Am Moving In, With No Ring In Sight.

I guess this isn't really something that I need to broadcast, but I wanted to address it anyway. I am moving into an apartment with Matt this summer. We have no plans of marriage in the foreseeable future.
We have found a place in Omaha that we will be moving into. I am going to school. He got a full time job! I am going to continue with my military training.

Here is why I am addressing this. Many people have given me questionable, weird looks when I say that we are getting an apartment together. That I am switching from Lincoln to Omaha for school. I have gotten some "shame on you" finger pointing and some disapproving looks. I know that it doesn't matter what other people think, but at the same time it does matter to me.

Reasons that I am okay with moving in with no plans of marriage

1. Getting to know each other.
For the married folks, you know what I am talking about. You get to know a person a whole lot better once you are living with them. How the brush their teeth. Do they sing in the shower? Do they leave their gross, dirty underwear on the bathroom floor when they shower.
For some people these may not seem like a problem, but every person has their own little quirks and when you move in with that person, one thing you need to decide is whether or not you can live with those for the rest of your life.

2. Statistics
Rates are increasing a lot within the teenage/ young adult age group. There is less stigma about getting married young, so many people are okay with living together before marriage, while they are finishing their education. More females are actually going to college as well, so there are more females who want to wait to get married until they have finished college.
While studies have shown that those who live together before marriage are more likely than those to break up. Some studies also show that those people who do make it to marriage are happier with living together after marriage and less likely to divorce. People know the other person and they are comfortable with them.

3. I am in no hurry to get married, settle down, and have kids.
I know this is the same for a lot of people my age. They like the idea of being with someone, getting married and all of that, but they want to finish school. I hope to finish my 4 year degree, then move on to a masters program. I am still unsure what I want to do as far as a job after than, but I have a general field that I want to go in.
Personally, I want to focus on career success before I have another little life to worry about. Many people are continuing to work on other things and the average age of marriage and first kid is getting a lot older than it used to be. I have a long time before I think about starting to plan a wedding. Sure, every girl is mentally planning it and thanks to Pinterest, who isn't planning some wedding ideas (even your second wedding for some of you).
Even if I am planning my wedding to some degree, it doesn't mean that I want to actually be planning it anytime soon.
Personally, we have been together for 8 months today, by the time we are fully moved into our apartment, it will be 9 months. It is longer than some, but still not very long. I want to be together for at least 3 years before I think about marrying someone. Granted, Matt and I dated my freshman year in high school and kinda stayed friends throughout. He was my best friend (other than Katelin of course) before we started dating. But like I said before, I am in no hurry.
Marriage

4. Because my first marriage is going to be my last.
I have heard this so many times. I have seen it on the internet, but this is true for me. If I am going to commit to marrying someone, I want to make sure that it is the right person. I want to know who I am marrying, their goals for their future, and their lifelong plans. If something goes wrong, we will work together to fix it. I don't plan to get divorced.
If I know that he leave his underwear on the bathroom floor, I can either get him to work on not doing it, or I can learn to pick up after him. In the first weeks of marriage, I don't want to be learning about the things that drive me crazy about him. I want to be spending time with him. Cooking dinner together and not fighting. I want to have some of that little stuff out of the way, so we can move on to the bigger stuff like buying a house, traveling together, talking about kids.

5. Money is tight.
I saved this for last because it is kind of a lame reason. He is fresh out of college and just starting in the job market. I am still in college, living off every military dime that I can. I am paying for a study abroad trip and I am saving every penny for that. I don't plan on living in the dorms again because they are outrageously expensive. I don't have a ton of close girlfriends who are in the area or that are interested in getting a place together either.

Between Matt and I, we will learn to take care of our bills, grocery shopping, and having fun together. We will have good times and bad, but we will make it through it together. I guess we will see what the future brings to us.

Also, as far as I know, Matt doesn't leave his clothes on the bathroom floor, so we should be okay!

Do you have more reasons why to or to not move in with your significant other? Let me know!

Bucket List Number Two

If there is one thing that came from all of last year, it's that life is too short. WAY too short.

When my grandpa was in his last few days of life, he pulled me aside and told me not to work too hard, because life goes by way too fast and you won't be able to do all the things that you want to do in life. He told me that there were a lot of things that he wished he had time for.

After he passed away, I made myself promise that I would do as many things as I could, without worry about cost (to an extent), time, or other people's worries. I have made a long bucket list of all of the things I want to do before I graduate college and have been slowly crossing things off this year. I have crossed off Colorado, Arizona, and Wyoming as places that I have traveled to. I crossed off volunteering in an animal shelter, because we did that on spring break. Today, I crossed off making homemade ice cream with my mentor. One step at a time, I have been crossing things off. I have been working on reading my entire library, but the problem is that it just keeps getting bigger.

All of these things I do in my grandpa's memory.

Okay. Mom, wipe your tears from your eyes and continue on..

I wrote a bucket list last summer while I was at AIT, but I quickly finding myself thinking of so many other things that I want to add to it. (If you haven't read the first list, it is right here.)
Now, this isn't really a bucket list.. its more like.. a Degree list. all the things I want to do before I graduate college and start to settle down.

So here are the additional things that I want to do:

Write a book
Max my PT test
Make play-doh
Make thank you cards for my professors
Spend a day at the lake
Go to the Zoo
Take a paddle boat ride
Go hiking
Take a nap in the grass
Donate Plasma
Put messages in balloons and release them
Watch all of How I Met Your Mother
Create an awesome smash journal
Go for a midnight swim
Skinny Dipping (just to say I did)
Jump in a pool fully clothed (Like in the movies)
Learn to play a song on the piano/ or guitar
Go on a cruise
Spend an afternoon in a hammock
Bake in the middle of the night with someone special
Go to a spa
Get a professional massage.
Get my nails done with my mom
Play messy twister
Fill water guns with paint and have a "water fight"
Try authentic food from another country  South Africa!
Work from home.
Go to a drive in movie.
Stand under a waterfall
Play paintball
Kiss at the top of a ferris wheel
See the Grand Canyon
Make my own dress for an event/party
Pay off my student loans
Sleep in front of the Christmas tree
Decorate my home office with quotes and lyrics
Take a train somewhere
Learn how to solve the bottom of a Rubik's Cube
Go on a Safari  May 23 and 24th: SOUTH AFRICA!
Drive across the entire country
Eat Fried Oreos
Eat 3 things on a stick in one day (State fair, here I come!)
Randomly pay someone's restaurant bill

There are so many other things that I want to do with my life, but I want to accomplish as many things as possible before I graduate, so I can start settling down and marking things off on my future husband and kids bucket lists.

So the question for the day is...

What is the thing that you look forward the most to doing on your bucket list?

Let me know!

10 College Tips Coming from a Girl Who Didn't Rush!

I've learned a lot in the months that I have been in college. Most girls fit into a few categories. Sorority. "Nerds." and somewhere in between. But as I read through a lot of the magazine tips that they offer for going to college, some of them don't seem to fit, at least not my college experience. Everyone is going to have their own experience, but these are some of the things that I have learned.
Take each one of these with you as you go, but expect your own experiences along the way. Remember. College is suppose to be some of the best years of your life. Make some friends and some memories along the way.

10. Get Involved and Find a club that fits your personality.
Clubs are a great way to make a ton of new friends. Most universities have clubs for pretty much anything you could possibly think of. UNL has a club for the upgraded treatment of squirrels. When I say anything, I mean ANYTHING! If it's not out there, you can probably start it.
I know personally I was not interested in rushing. I didn't want to be involved in the Greek Life, which is fine. Joining clubs and going to the meetings are a great way to make a good network between friends. These friends may be in some of your future classes and could possibly end up helping you out quite a bit in the future. It is also good to make some friends outside of your high school besties, especially if your friends chose a different college like mine did.
While I am talking about getting involved, many universities have clubs for each major. Join it if there is one! You will learn valuable experience about what not to do when it comes to class load and may even find someone in your classes that you know to study with. Making a network of people you can rely on always helps!
I went on a spring break trip with Students Today- Leaders Forever. Best decision ever. I made a ton of great friends that I see all over campus during the week. All of them are friendly and fun and I am so glad that I went!

9. Schedule your own classes to your liking.
If you like mornings, and I mean you get up early on Saturdays and Sundays because you can, then go for morning classes. It is a great way to finish your classes for the day by noon and have the rest of the day to do what you want. If you struggle to get out of bed at 8:30 for high school, and sleep til noon on the weekends, afternoon  classes aren't always bad thing. 1st semester my earliest class was at 10:30 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and at 9:30 on Tuesday-Thursday. But I was often in class until 3:15. This semester I have class at 8:30, three days a week and the other two days are well after 10. It is a great balance because some days I am out of class early, and some days I have the mornings to get stuff done.
I say do what you want, but the biggest thing I recommend is be out of class by 12 or 1 on Fridays. You will thank me.

8. Try to make friends with your roommate.
My roommate, who was very awesome, was a random assignment at the beginning of the year. (Sorry Alie if you are reading this) She was a VERY blonde, Texas, Cheerleader who was rushing in the fall. When I first saw her on Facebook, I knew that we were going to have absolutely nothing in common. I didn't like her. I didn't care to. I didn't want to get to know her. I was very close minded walking into the room on move in day. After about half of the semester, we were best friends. We had one strong night of bonding over grocery shopping and board games and ended up being super close after that. She ended up moving back to Texas after the semester and now I miss her like crazy!

ALIEEEE COME BACKKK!

7. Exercise every once in a while, even if you don't like to that much.
I didn't believe that I would gain any weight when I came to college. I figured that I exercise enough, I can eat fast food 2 or 3 times a week and pile my plate up with pizza in the dining hall. Who cares. That weight comes fast. I gained the freshman 15 and then some in the first semester and I am still fighting with it well into the spring semester. Believe me when I say, it goes on a lot easier than it comes off.

6. Take classes that don't necessarily go with your major.
Don't be afraid to explore classes every once in a while. Take one class a semester that doesn't exactly fit into your normal routine. It helps broaden your knowledge and you may find that it comes in handy someday. My first semester of college, I ended up taking 2 classes for my psych major, an Ethnic Studies class, a Women and Gender Studies class, and a Creative Writing class. Which one was my favorite. Not my major classes. It caused me to pick up a minor in Women and Gender Studies as I was figuring out my degree plan. My ethnics class also lead me to the study abroad trip that I am going on this summer. You never know what doors a single class is going to open up for you.

5. Meet with your adviser at least once your freshman year.
For my major, there was a class called Career Planning in Psychology that was required for my degree. It was a one credit hour class taught on Wednesday afternoons that was taught by my adviser. This was GREAT! If your major doesn't have one, I am truly sorry. This class helped go through the options for psychology majors as well as recommended classes. Your adviser can do most of the same things in a meeting that we did in class.
Good questions to ask about are things that would set you apart from other people with the same major. What are good groups to get involved in on campus and off campus to help build your resume for future jobs that you may be interested in. Always ask if they have any contact information for possible jobs or interns that you could get in the future.
Also, go in with questions about the wide variety of things you could do with your degree, because I was truly surprised by the list of things to do with a college degree.

4. Take your grade seriously from day one of the class.

Be ready to jump right into assignments and material. College classes go by very fast and only meet a few times a week, so professors often jump right in. Don't take the first couple weeks lightly. This stuff will still be on the test and you will kick yourself when it comes time for the test. Once you do poorly on the first test, it is often hard to bring you grade back up to where you want it to be. Many classes only have a handful of grades during the entire semester.

Because I worked my butt off first semester of freshman year, I ended up getting a scholarship from the school for my academic achievement. This scholarship made it so I have no student loans for next school year. You never know what could happen as a result of your good grades.
3. Don't Be THAT girl.
A lot of girls get involved in this as they come to campus. They make new friends and have this belief that there is nothing else to do on weekends, or week nights (Thursdays mostly). Don't be that girl in the Friday morning classes that spend the entire time talking about how she doesn't remember last night. Be classy, because other people who don't drink, find it very annoying to listen to how you lost your shoes, phone, and purse last night. Also, if you do drink, please don't be all over the guys around you. It's also not classy, and no one wants to watch. Please. I beg you.
Also, be safe about your drinking. Pour your own drinks- ALWAYS. Don't put your drink down if you are at a place where there are a ton of people. And don't drink until you pass out or throw up. I, personally, don't understand what people think is fun about drinking until you throw up.

2. Make a friend in every single one of your classes.
This is a tip that someone else gave me and I have found it very useful for many reasons. When you pick a seat on the first day, even if you know the class is going to be hard, sit towards the front. This often guarantees that you will be next to someone who is very interested in the class, or that studies hard. In this case, make sure that at some point in the beginning of the semester, find a way to get their name and email address.
No matter how great of a student you are, there will come a day when you just don't feel like going to class. Or you are sick. Or you have to be gone for some reason. If you do, email that person. If you notice they are gone, email them you note first without them asking. They will return the favor when you need them to. This person also can make a good study partner if you are needing one.

1. Organize, Organize, Organize!
The best way to not forget something is to write it down. My organization is a little overboard and some people (my boyfriend) often mock me. I have a Google calendar of where I need to be and what time. This includes classes schedule, the research lab, extra credit opportunities for classes, and military stuff. (and everything else I do.)  My calendar on my computer syncs to my phone so I have it at the touch of my hand if I need to know if I am busy at a certain time. GREAT!
Then, I have my planner. At the beginning of the semester, I take the syllibi that the teachers hand out and write each class in a different color. I fill it out all the way til the end of the semester so I can look ahead to see what assignments will be next week so I can help plan around my schedule. This is super important because it makes sure that I don't forget about an assignment or a class. After the assignment is done, I highlight it.
Now, I know. I sound obsessive, but on top of all of that, I have a notebook that puts the two together. I plan out Monday through Friday on what night I am going to work on what assignment and in a separate column, it has what extra things I have to do that day other than go to class. This way I can figure out the best time to work on an assignment in order to get it done before the due date.
Unless you have a mild case of OCD or are "Type A" personality, I don't expect anyone to do as much as I do, but in your last few months of high school, practice with what works for you. Once your figure out what works for you, there will be no worry of forgetting to do an assignment.

Out of all of these tips, I suggest the most is find a place that you fit in. Do what you love to do. But, don't feel like you can't have friends if you aren't in a Sorority/Fraternity . I felt that way for the first few months until I realized that I just needed to meet the right people. It may take you a while to find a great group of friends, but once you do, it will be worth it.

College Dining Hall Rules.

This link is for every runner that needs to feel better about their mental thought process during a run. Or anyone who can't really relate and just needs a laugh. It made me laugh out loud in the dining hall and look like some freak. It happens (:

Now that you had a good laugh for day. You can finish reading my post!

So this week was the first week back from spring break. I started thinking back to the eating habits that I developed when I came to college. NOT GOOD.

I was straight out of AIT. Before I left Ft Leonardwood, I was weighing about 140. Mine was closer to a freshman 20 by the end of the first semester and I wasn't even drinking and partying with the rest of them. I couldn't believe how fast I had let myself gain the weight, and I kicked myself for it every day. But I am finally doing something about it.

At this point, most people are probably thinking, how do I lose that 15-20 lbs?

With this month being all about physical fitness and nutrition in my happiness project, I have been eating "clean" When I say clean, I don't necessarily mean all of those clean pins on pinterest. I have adapted it to my own rules because I live in the dorm and it is so hard for me to make my own food. I am pretty limited to the options of the dining hall.

1. I will eat any fruit or vegetable that doesn't have anything added to it. This mostly includes fresh fruit (the dining hall had peaches, watermelon, grapes, and pears this week!) I also take an apple, orange, or banana to go with me so I have something to snack on in between meals.  Vegetables normally include anything that the dining hall has put in a microwave and called "steamed."

2. I eat one piece of meat. This gets a little tricky because I don't want to eat a lot of added stuff with my meat, but I am not apposed to spices and whatever they cook it in because otherwise I would starve! This typically includes chicken, or hamburgers (just the burger, sometimes I put tomato slices on it), sometimes they have fish, but it often sits in too much butter so I try to avoid it. For people who don't want to be this extreme, I would suggest one serving of a main course dish from the dining hall.

3. Eggs. Breakfast Every morning! I eat 3 hard boiled eggs, which I often cut into kind of an egg salad in a bowl so it feels like I am eating more than I am. Scrambled eggs are good, but I am not sure how the dining hall makes them, so that makes me a little unsure for my project.

4. I don't eat any of the pasta, potatoes, fried foods, sugary cereals, or tortilla wrapped heart attacks that the dining hall offers. Your body doesn't need processed carbs because if you are eating enough fruit, your body is getting the natural sugars from the fruits.

5. If I must eat a salad, which I avoid just because it seems so clique and boring and I am never full from it. But if I must, I add chicken and lots of vegetables. I also use the lemon slices in the dining hall for a dressing. It gives it a zesty taste, with no preservatives and only a few, if any calories.

6. The one thing that I do eat that is not necessarily clean (depending on the pinterest website you are on) is cottage cheese. I do it for the added calcium that I am not getting from other foods. I don't eat any other dairy products.

7. I have two "cheat" meals a week so Matt and I can still go out on dates and so I can still go to Grandma's house. Lord knows you don't make it out of Grandma's house eating vegetables without a little (or a stick) of butter added to them.

8. I drink a glass of water right away when I wake up. I have a cup with a straw that I fill up at breakfast and sip on til lunch, where I fill it up again, and sip on it til supper. I don't focus on how much I drink while I am running around during the day, but I try to finish the cup before the next meal. Then after supper I try to finish most of it. If I go for a run at night I normally finish the cup off before my shower. Then I drink a glass before I crawl in bed. I would estimate that in total I drink about a gallon of water everyday.

9. I ALWAYS!! ALWAYS!! am carrying at least one piece of fresh fruit, if not two with me in case I get hungry. This way I don't give in to the vending machine blues or end up eating something in the union.

10. Skip the coffee unless you drink it black. Starbucks is not doing your body any favors. Invest time to get a good nights sleep and if that can't happen, take a 20 minute nap every time you get too tired to focus. You will wake up relatively refreshed because your body needs about 20 minutes of sleep to function for about 2-3 hours (I don't suggest this, I have just heard that it works.) Any longer than 30 minutes, but not 3-5 hours is going to leave you tired and in a fog. (Again. NOT supporting this idea.)  I try to get a good 7-8 hour night sleep. I go to bed at 10:30 and wake up at 6:30, but if your class load is worse than mine. Go for it.

Now, I have heard this diet referred to as clean or the paleo diet.. but I don't know about either of these specific trends.  I know that these are the rules that I have set for myself.

Now... Does it work.

On April 1st, I weighed myself and I weighed 153.2..
Today, just three days later, I weighed myself and weighed 151.4.

Now, I can't say that it is just the diet, because I have been running every day and doing sit ups and push ups. But even before I started the diet when I was trying to run every day, I wasn't seeing any weight movement on the scale. I guess we will see what then end of the month brings to the scale. The pedometer that I downloaded on my phone has really opened my eyes to how much I am actually going. I hope I can match, or at least get close to the numbers that I am getting during the week when Saturday and Sunday comes!

My question for the day:
What is your favorite workout song..? Favorite workout?

New Year's Resolution

I will be the very first to admit that I hate New Year's Resolutions. By the end of January, people forget their promises they made to themselves and go back to their old ways. People rarely lose the weight that they keep saying they are going to. People buy gym memberships that get used for a few weeks. That's why I don't like them. They never get kept..

But I have goals for this coming year..

1. I am going to the gym at least two days a week. MINIMUM. I am shooting for 3-5. One of my dear military friends said she would go with me. I will schedule it into my days to make sure that I go at the same time every week. That way I have to reason to say that I can't go that day.

2. Eat things that come from the earth more often than things that don't  I will eat more fruits, veggies, meat, dairy, and other natural products more than I eat processed foods such as chips, McDonalds, oils, and other foods that aren't good for you. I will get a blender for the dorms so I can make smoothies for some of my meals instead of eating foods full in carbs, calories, and fats.

3. Write on my blog more. Simple enough. I just want to write more. I want to document my life more so I remember what happens in my life during the year. Often things get forgotten so easily and I want to make sure that I document the "best years of my life." Eventually I want to put my blog posts in order into a photo book of the year to create a yearbook of my years.

4. Give 100% to everything I do. If I cannot give 100%, I need to quit. I often stretch myself too thin and get over stressed and go into breakdown mode where I lay in bed and sleep instead of doing my to do list of things I need. I am a Full Time Student taking 16 credit hours, A National Guard Soldier, a McDonald's Employee, A Teammates Mentor, a Research Assistant, A Girlfriend, A Daughter, A Sister, A Friend. I want to Study Abroad, and Get in Shape. I want to Spend my spring break traveling. I want to do so many things, but I need to limit myself to things that I can give 100% of my effort to when I am there.

5. I want to spend less money. I want to have savings so I can do all of the fun things that I want to do.

6. I want to be creative and being fun. I want to do some of the things that I pin on my pinterest boards.

7. I want to take a picture everyday. Of something. Not necessarily of me, but I want to complete photo challenges every month.

I don't know what this year will bring me, but I want to make the very most of this year. I want to experience life and enjoy the time I have with the people in my life. I hope the very best to everyone as this year progresses.

Life's too Short

Life is really too short to let anything hold you back from doing something crazy. Money is a poor excuse for not doing something you really want to do. And time is an even worse excuse for not doing something you love.

I know that life gets crazy and we seem to get so busy. But the more I think about it the more I realized that I volunteered my open time to drive her is because if no one could come get me so I could come home for the holidays, I would appreciate someone helping me out. Everyone deserves to spend time with their family for the holidays. Now, I understand there are soldiers that are deployed and unable to come home. Their are duties that must be done that don't stop because of Christmas. But the amount of holidays that a child gets to spend with their parents are already too limited the way it is. Every opportunity should be taken advantage of when possible.

I truly don't know what I would do without my parents.

Earlier this week, I got the opportunity to cut the National Guard Birthday cake to represent the young soldiers that make up the guard. I was the youngest Nebraska National Guard member present at the celebration on Tuesday morning at the capital building.

While I was sitting in the chair waiting for the ceremony to start, the Chaplin was sitting next to me, occasionally changing his view and looking around the state capital building. I looked over at him as he leaned over and pointed out the marble pillars and huge concrete blocks that made up the hall that we were in. He pointed out that the building was truly a product of its time. That it was. It was built in the 30s, where everything was made from stone, marble, and other various expensive building materials. It was beautiful.

Later. Someone mentioned how much hope they had for the young generation of military. Which is definitely not heard all too often. My generation is weird. We are somewhat lazy. And fewer and fewer work hard for what they want.

But the speakers at the ceremony pointed out how awesome it was that so many soldiers enlist at 17.

I got to cut the birthday cake with the oldest air guard and army guardsmen present as well as the youngest air guard soldier, who was 18.

After the ceremony, I got to talk to Dave Heineman and Major General Bohac. Two of the commanders for the Nebraska National Guard.

What an amazing experience! I can honestly say that these two men have worked their ass off in order to get to where they want to be. What great role models for military personal. Heineman talked about his experience as a veteran and Major General talked about everything that the military has given to him.

I guess what I am trying to get at was to take some time this holiday season to thank a veteran. If you have the money, find an organization that is sending care packages to the deployed soldiers for the holidays.

They do a lot more than we really give them credit for.

    With Time, Comes Change.

    HOLY COW.

    Life.
    Is.
    Crazy.

Since my last blog, the year has completely taken a 180.
    Relationships end. Relationships begin.
AIT is over. College has begun. (actually.. I am 2 weeks away from being done with my first semester)
    Finals week is coming up.
I am back working at McDonald's in Lincoln. Living in the Dorms.

    Life. Has. Been. Crazy.

Being a college student and living in the dorms, I am not really spending all that much time worrying about ways to save money. I am more focused on making it through the week and living life to the very fullest with the experiences that I can.

I have begun my bucket list (for college) and I am attempting to work on it as much as I can.
One thing on my bucket list is having my dream body and because I plan to go see my roommate, who is moving back to Texas, for spring break. I am working hard to have it as soon as I can. I also want to have a super great PT score by the end of this school year so I can go to Warriors Leadership Course this summer if my unit chooses to send me.

I am changing my blog and hoping to try to write more about being healthy, college life, and military life.
I am in the process of setting up a plan for working out more, eating healthier, and doing all of the stuff that I want to do before graduating college.

In a following post, I will include my bucket list and in another post I will include my fitness plan.
I hope to keep my readers/ get some of them back even with the changes I have decided to make to my post!

    Thanks for Reading as always!

My Love-Hate Relationship with the Kitchen

With Sean starting school and me looking at a part time job, I have to find something for breakfast! Last night while Sean was at work I got the crazy idea that I could cook. HA!
I decided to try to make applesauce, tortillas, and granola bars. HaHa!!

Here is the applesauce recipe that I attempted.

Here is the granola bars recipe I tried.

And here is the tortillas that I killed.

Well let's just say that nothing really turned out how I thought it was going to/ how the recipe called for.

The tortillas were awful. They tasted like pure flour. Instead of using regular flour, I tried using whole wheat flour. It is better for you, but it turned out dry and awful.

The granola bars turned out harder than I thought they were going to be. I didn't have the right sized pan so I was going to try to make them into cookie sized granola cookies.
Fail. They tasted like burnt honey. I wish they would have worked out, but many I will try again with a different recipe.

I think the applesauce was the one I was hoping would work out the most. It looked soo good, but it was mushy and gross. I was really disappointed.

So, my relationship with the kitchen is not very strong right now. I go thru these random fails, where everything I make doesn't work out. I have since retried working in the kitchen and have made some pretty good stuff. I wish I would have been successful with the granola bars because those would make really good snacks, but that's okay. Maybe next time.
